Our Programmes
THE HOKOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
“Girls and boys who learn to read, write and count will provide a better future for their families and countries. With improved education, so many other areas are positively affected. In short, education has the power to make the world a better place.”
The above quotation is what inspires Togbe and Mama Hokor, who dare to make a difference with The Hokor Scholarship Programme.
The role of education in development cannot be over- emphasised, and it is a known fact that in this age and era, no country can succeed if it has not educated its people. As said by John Dewey, “Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; Education is life itself.” (2005)
The main objective of the Programme is to promote education in societies around the world.
Specifically, the programme aims to:
- Celebrate the achievement of young people in the community and encourage them to aim higher,
- Bridge the access gap of vulnerable young people and address general inequality,
- Assist brilliant students to achieve their full potential,
- Encourage school-going and enhance quality education in all societies; and
- Create awareness on the importance of education.
In pursuit of these objectives, the Scheme involves close work with identified stakeholders including community leaders, parents and teachers to ensure the success of the Programme.
In a nutshell, the HEF believes that when children have access to quality education in safe and supportive learning environments, the benefits for pupils, their families, their communities and their country are innumerable. Undoubtedly, investing in education yields significant development advantages, and it brings the highest returns from individuals, societies and countries at large.
THE HOKOR MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME
The purpose of the Hokor mentorship programme is to tap into the existing knowledge, skills, expertise and experience of identified individuals and groups for transfer of information and what is learned to the younger generation for the realization of their full potential.
A mentee should expect the following from the mentor:
SKILLS
This is where leadership begins so teach them by being an exemplary Leader. A mentee sees you the mentor as a role model and wants to be just like you. The mentor is therefore expected to assist the mentee with the following skills:
- Provide mentees with leadership skills
- Become a more effective listener to enhance mentee’s communication skills
- Assist mentee to improve their reading skills
- Encourage mentee to practice writing skills
- Provide them with conflict management skills
- Support mentees to develop decision making skills
KNOWLEDGE
The mentee wants to follow your career path.
Help them with the following:
- Inspire mentees to aspire and focus on their education
- Guide mentees to gain clarity on career choices and informed decisions
- Encourage them to read widely and introduce them to a story book a month
- Challenge them to be curious about everything
- Expose them to writing competitions as writing expands our vocabulary, which has been shown to be directly correlated with success.
- Facilitate access to people in your network that might be a resource for the mentee
Getting smarter takes time and with genuine commitment. You need to work hard at it. Knowledge builds up, like compound interest says (Warren Buffett) and Change is the result of true learning (Leo Bscaglia)
